2024 Jialan Chen, Homage to Robert Bouchet
BRAND NEW!
2024 Jialan Chen (student of Andrea Tacchi), Homage to Robert Bouchet model
Scale: 650mm
Nut width: 52mm
SP/IN, French Polish
Country of Origin: China
Jialan believes that Robert Bouchet represents the pinnacle of taste for classical guitar, both in sound and aesthetics. Indeed, Robert Bouchet not only revitalized the French school of classical guitar building, but also enabled and inspired numerous artists such as Ida Presti, Julian Bream, Daniel Friederich, Dominique Field, and so on…. The most unique thing about a Robert Bouchet guitar is the traverse bar he audaciously added under the bridge, notched to fit the five struts system. The result is a guitar with uniquely sweet and dreamy sound, precise response, robust power, and incredible ease of playing.
Jialan Chen was a student of the legendary Italian master luthier Andrea Tacchi. Tacchi, instead gratifying towards the Italian school, admitted that he spent more time studying the French school guitars; and nothing beats studying one of France’s greatest maestros of all times- Robert Bouchet. Like Tacchi, Jialan believes that there is no exact “copy” of any guitar. This homage to Robert Bouchet guitar represents Jialan best effort to capture the spirit of a Robert Bouchet guitar, with even potential improvements.
Jialan is an amazing classical guitar player on top being a luthier. He has an outstanding understanding of timbre, control of tone and nail techniques. Before sending out any guitar, he would personally inspect the sound qualities and dynamic range. As a luthier, he is meticulous about the weight of the guitar. This guitar was very lightly built, and to further cut the weight, he used maple instead of rosewood for the bridge. This resulted in a 7 grams weight cut, and even faster response.
Jialan used Italian spruce he personally selected from Val di fiemme, the same region Stradivarius selected his spruce for his violins. Under light, the middle of the guitar’s bookmatch presents quite a dreamy look. Back and sides were East Indian Rosewood, potentially the highest cost efficient wood. The headstock was hand-carved in Bouchet’s design, making the headstock a pleasure to hold every time I change strings. The 18 holes on the bridge make it close to impossible to hurt the gold-inlaying art. The French Polish was masterfully done. The pores on the Indian Rosewood were perfectly filled, giving the whole guitar a mirror-like reflection.
An Andrea Tacchi is over $20,000, and the last Bouchet I played was $125,000. For lovers of Tacchi or Bouchet, this is an opportunity like no others.
