2014 Glenn Canin

$9,000.00

2014 Glenn Canin (ex. Marc Teicholz)

Spruce/spruce nomex double top

Sloane tuners

Indian rosewood back and sides

650 scale

Country of Origin: USA

This is an impressive double top guitar that has a lot to offer. It was built for the 1989 GFA winner, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music professor Marc Teicholz. Canin admitted that when he built this guitar, it was his best work at the time. Aruguably, this could be one of his best works during his entire nomex period. This guitar has Canin’s signature sweetness, robust volume, open and direct projection, incredible response, and really long sustain- you heard me right. Many double top builders struggle with sustain, but there is not even a hint of that problem on this guitar. In addition to that, this guitar has a wide palette of tones and colors, which are infinitely fun to explore.

When I became Teicholz’s student in 2018, I was in need of a fine instrument. Teicholz was very kind to invite me to try his guitar collection. I chose this guitar over his Paulino Bernabe (sold through GSI for $14,000), his new 2018 Glenn Canin balsa double top ($12,000), and Xavier Jara’s Hugo (the guitar he won GFA with). I only learned later that this 2014 Canin was his wife’s favorite guitar out of his whole collection, and his daughter told me that Teicholz “basically whined about (selling) it for a long time.” As shown in the pictures, there are signs of wear in the French polish, but no dings, cracks, repairs, or any damage to the wood.

Glenn Canin was a classical guitar player before becoming a luthier. While he was working on his master’s degree, he had an injury that made it too painful to play. He had to quit, but he was reluctant to leave the classical guitar world. He slowly picked up guitar luthiery, and soon revealed great talent and skills. He credited a lot of his success to his experience hearing and playing some of the best guitars in the world, such as Santos, Fleta, Friederich, Dammann, and so on. Those influences are reflected in the bracing of this guitar- this guitar was traditionally braced, with a Bouchet-like fan bracing system and “crossbow” struts like a Fleta. This guitar shows his maturity in sound, crafts and aesthetics. Teicholz especially likes the purple in the rosette.

This guitar features a side sound port, elevated finger board and an added 20th fret.

Unfortunately Canin doesn’t build guitars this way anymore. Canin builds balsa double tops nowadays, with the base price of $12,000, and approximately 2 years wait time.

Players who play Glenn Canin include Marc Teicholz, Celil Refik Kaya, Alexandra Viloteau (Thomas Viloteau’s wife), ocaasionally Thomas Viloteau, and more.
